Thursday, 4/7

Announcements
  • The Book Fair is STILL tomorrow, Friday at 11:00 in the gym.
  • Your final test will be Monday in class.
Classwork
  • Prepared for Monday's test by speed reading, "Leech" on pgs. 183-184 of NorthStar. We did a push down drill, meaning that we read the article 3 times, the first time in 2 min., the second in 1:30 min., and the last in 1 min. After each read, we answered the questions in each of the main idea, detail, and inference sections.
  • Previewed "Looking Forward" and then read the first section to find the pattern of organization. We decided that it was a list of causes for the disappearance of indigenous cultures. We then scanned to find an example of each of the causes.
  • Took a speed reading test for Dr. Anderson's research.
Homework
  • Read "An endangered culture, on top of the world." Identify the main pattern of organization and take notes that follow that pattern and includes the main details.
  • Read "Gross Medicine" on pg. 186 of NorthStar, and answer questions 1-5 on pg. 187.
  • Read "The Penan" on pgs. 208-209 of NorthStar, and answer questions 1-6 on pgs. 209-210.

Thursday, 3/31

Announcements
  • The third book fair has been moved to Friday, April 8 from 11:00 to 12:00.
  • Your book reports will be due on Thursday, April 7 by 9:30 a.m.
  • The fourth reading test has been moved to Monday, April 11 in class.
Classwork
  • Reviewed Ex. R12 and started Ex. R11 in TOEFL packet.
  • Completed the vocabulary exercises in NorthStar from pgs. 189 to 191, including Review 1 and 2 and Expand.
  • Discussed the pattern of organization in "What Is Alternative Medicine?" We concluded that the pattern was either a list or a comparison/contrast between alternative and modern medicine. The pattern is not sequence nor problem/solution because these patterns applied only to the story and not to the whole chapter.
Homework
  • Your last news reports! Yulia will present the news report.
  • Personal reading logs (If you are finished, you don't need to turn in your log.)
  • Choose one pattern of organization, either list or comparison/contrast, for "Alternative Medicine." Write out notes for the pattern you chose. For example, if you chose compare/contrast, you would make a chart with alternative medicine on one side and modern medicine on the other. You then include every major category of comparison, such as training or methods. Then for each category, you would include information for both kinds of medicine. For training, you might include many years for modern medicine and some--many, others--none for alternative medicine.
